Love Song for Altie

song
lyrics by Caroline Harper New
score by Lyana Cremnitz
vocals by Emily Becker

This song is based on an ongoing poetry project, Archives of the Altamaha, which follows the correspondence of Altie and Esti, two monsters native to southeastern Georgia and Florida.

In love and separated by geography, the two creatures long for one another in their letters. In doing so, their letters also document the changing landscapes they inhabit—the aftermath of swamp fires, the remnants of oil spills, and the construction of a nuclear power plant on the Altamaha River.

As the monsters reckon their own positions amongst fellow species, they ask us to question the line between invasive and endangered, define love beyond gender and time, and find parallels in different forms of extinction.
